In recent culture , mixtapes have become the starting point for a lot of underground artists , mainly in the hip hop world you see the rise of some going from a 'nobody' to be becoming a global superstar ! such as Nicki Minaj who had one of the most successful mixtapes in the past decade . 'Beam Me up Scotty' came out in 2009 and just a year later her debut EP 'Pink Friday' was released , i talk about this because as Nicki Minaj has become more mainstream over the years her music has become more commercial and 'pop' instead of the Hip Hop genre .
Which shows that in this day and age e it is possible to change as an artist and be more versatile.

I would say that mixtapes usually tend to be more successful in the Hip Hop community rather than any other genre e.g both Meek Mill and Chief Keef released mixtapes before they became signed to a major label.
