Evaluation 4 : What have you learned from your audience feedback
Following on from my AS, I have realised
that the feedback that you get from your audience is very crucial, if majority
of the audience member does not like your product then there is no chance of it
selling and making a good profit!
I feel that in AS I didn’t really get the
importance of audience feedback and therefore didn't really put as much of an
effort into it as I possibly could of. This year I was determined to change
that, I done this through starting my audience from very early on, around
October time I made a questionnaire and asked the general public specific facts
about themselves and their musical interests.
This allowed me to produce thorough results in my research, by analysing
my findings I found that there were relationships between people’s age,
ethnicity and even where they lived e.g. there was a pattern with people who
lived in North London that like Dancehall music . From this I was able to
conduct a graph of my findings.
In the end my group decided to choose Estelle
featuring Janelle Monae – Do My Thing, due to its fun, bouncy nature.
Our target audience was mainly aimed for 14 to 18 year old of mainly a girl skew, due to the artists being female and the image that they portrayed.

In the cinema the
majority of the audience was aged 17-18 so it fitted in with our target
audience , there was generally positive reviews, with majority of the people saying.it was FUN meaning that what i wanted to achieve from the beginning , a lot of people commented on our mise en scene and how this was our strongest part of the video i do believe so as we took a high interest into what we should wear . Although most of our reviews were positive i was worried that they could be possibly a bit bias as the feedback was mostly given by our peers however i have found people who have provided me with constructive criticism. For my ancillary i was told by 2 people that they would of preferred my advert to be more colorful just like my digipak .
I can see where they are coming from but i chose to go for a more plain advert because the advert provides information about the group so i wanted it to be clear and not distract from the group. However i do understand that audience preference is absolutely vital and if i did change anything i would probably change the off white background to maybe a baby , pale pink , just to give it a bit more colour
Furthermore another person said they really liked the colours of my digipak but wished that i had made the name 'NME' more distinct , if i could go back i would possibly make the album name smaller so that the artists name sticks out even more, because the most important thing is the artist..

I liked Tamara's she gave positive as well as constructive criticism , she said " she feels we should have a serious scene " which i fully agree with , we actually did have a serious scene (nighttime in 'glamorous' clothing) however due to lighting we could not include. There was one thing i didn't agree with is that we should have more people in the video , the only reason why i disagree with this point is because NME are debut artists to be honest they need all the spotlight on them !! as we all know music videos are there to promote the artist.
From all the audience feedback i have received over the last couple of months i am extremely pleased !
Even when I was in the cinema and i could see everyone dancing and clapping i felt really happy as thats what the music video is suppose to make people do.
By doing AS and A2 Media i have learnt that without audience feedback you have nothing , because you probably will not have an audience to show meaning that your product will not sell. Audience feedback provided me with knowledge and understanding that i probably never had before i took this course. The way in which people sell their products is really interesting but i think the most shocking thing i have learnt is that even if you are an artist it comes down to what your audience likes and what they want , in order for you to make it big you need to listen to them !
If i was to do my A2 media coursework again i will take into consideration all of the criticisms to better my work as there is always room for improvement, the constructive criticism was , ironically the best critisims i received as it was straight to the point , meaning if i was to this again i would have what my audience said in mind and work on improving so that if they saw it again they would be even more impressed with the changes.
Audience feedback from facebook , with generally positive comments ( which again could be bias as they are my peers)
Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Visuak links in terms of choice of colour in video, digipak and music video. The green and pink background in the music video was used at the beginning and in the graffiti background you can see hints of pink and green coming through. Also in the costume the colours are repeated in the video. This was then translated into the digipak and advert. Also you can see the adrogenous look with the suits being repeated. And the funny faces correlate with the digipak too.

1. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media products are aimed at the pop genre and we aspired
to follow some conventions but also to challenge the conventions that we didn’t
agree with like stereotypical views.
For Example we followed conventions and rules that where
shown by Carol Vernallis who analysed music videos in terms of how they were
edited and filmed. Vernallis recognised
that there was an increased amount of edits such as jumps cuts and special effects within a music
in contrast to films, also like the breaking of the rule of Continuity.
Differences that Vernallis Recognised :
- · Breaks in the rule of Continuty – Anything is possible in a music Video.
- · Special effects are used to Gain the attention of the Observer.
- · Base Tracks are used.
- · Jump Cuts are more frequent.
- · Camera work following the beat to the music
These Are Shown in the Song by Tinnie Tempah Ft Wiz - Till im Gone
- The Music Video Consits of Allot of Jump cust which is Conventional of Music Videos
- The Rule of Continuity is broken as it goes from day to night within minutes.
- Some Special effects are also used.
On our Music video we decided to follow the conventions that Vernallis recognised because the conventions allowed us to promote our Artists NME more efficiently as our Pop genre seemed to use loads of Special effects and Jump Cuts. We also chose not to have any narrative but a theme of changing stereotypes on women while still keeping it appealing to our genre.
- We Didnt Use a Narrative for our music Video ( Everything Looks Sponatneous and Exciting)
- We used special effects to keep the Observer interested. (Allowing Viewers to engage)
- We also filmed our music video in time with the beat as the camera followed our artists actions.
Another theory which was influential for our music video and something we tried to follow was Andrew Goodwins and the characterics he recognised in music videos.
- Music Videos Demonstrates Genre Charcteristics - Which are like the clothes that the artists wear or the dance routines ( Picture of Artists Dancing)
- The music video may show a relationship between the lyrics and the video whether it illustrates amplyfies or contrdicts. (Artists Improvising, doing whatever they want)
- The following of the demands of the genre which are set by the record label like motifs and colours. Our genre is pop, so we tried to use as much of bright colours as we could. ( At the start of out music video our artists is shown dancing behind many colours)
- Music videos also try to follow Intertexuality of other music videos.
I also tried to challenge the streotypes which was shown by Laura Maulvey. We didnt want our artists to be victim of the male gaze to the extent in other videos. We did this by the choice of our artists cloths, like our artists weared suits instead of bikinis.
For my ancillary work i tried to keep it conventional to our pop genre, so it would appeal to our target audience and also promote our artists. Here are some examples of digipaks that stood out to me and have influenced my work.
The reasons why these digipakes influenced my work is because they both looked appealing to thier target audience by the colours and images that they used.
The Genre of our Ancillary project followed our music video which is Pop. In my digipak i have tried to be creative by following the conventions of our genre like the bright colour i used.
- I Followed the convention of the 3 Colour rule. I used Green, Pink and White.
- I followed the font covention as i only used the Unfortunate event and 1 other font.
- I Made sure my record labels and copyright was clearly shown.
- The main focus of mu ancilary was the artists
I also followed some of these conventions for my Advertisement.
Four our music video we decided to follow more conventions than we challenged because our genre was pop and our main target audience expected some conventions like the bright colours and if we where to break them, then our artists might not be promoted effectively and positively. Some aspects like the stereotypical ideas on female artists we tried to challenge like wearning suits which arent revealing, we managed to still promote our artists in a way that our target audience will still like. Also we wouldnt have much controll if we was a real group who promoted real artists because our labels would have limited it and have told us to follow conventions, because they are proven to be popular and promote sales.
Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
This shows intertextuality for the opening of Jay Z and Kanye West- In Paris and our own music video. It opens similarly with the names of the artists followed by the name of the song. |

ALL PRODUCTION WORK COMPLETE!
That time has come! And it feels amazing! I can barely contain my excitement! It has been a fun learning experience but I most certainly can not hide the relief I feel now that the production of both the music video and the ancillary products are complete. Having consumed 96% of my life, it is nice to eventually see the end product and feel a sense of pride for my work. I have learnt so much over the past 5 months, my head could explode. But the creative journey isn't quite over yet as I have now got to prepare myself to plan for the Evaluation. So in the true media spirit, all i can say is BRING IT ON!
