1. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media products are aimed at the pop genre and we aspired to follow some conventions but also to challenge the conventions that we didn’t agree with like stereotypical views.

For Example we followed conventions and rules that where shown by Carol Vernallis who analysed music videos in terms of how they were edited and filmed.  Vernallis recognised that there was an increased amount of edits such as jumps cuts and special effects within a music in contrast to films, also like the breaking of the rule of Continuity.

Differences that Vernallis Recognised :

  • ·      Breaks  in the rule of Continuty – Anything is possible in a music Video.
  • ·      Special effects are used to Gain the attention of the Observer.
  • ·      Base Tracks are used.
  • ·      Jump Cuts are more frequent.
  • ·      Camera work following the beat to the music

These Are Shown in the Song by Tinnie Tempah Ft Wiz - Till im Gone

  • The Music Video Consits of Allot of Jump cust which is Conventional of Music Videos
  • The Rule of Continuity is broken as it goes from day to night within minutes.
  • Some Special effects are also used.

On our Music video we decided to follow the conventions that Vernallis recognised because the conventions allowed us to promote our Artists NME more efficiently as our Pop genre seemed to use loads of Special effects and Jump Cuts. We also chose not to have any narrative but a theme of changing stereotypes on women while still keeping it appealing to our genre.

  • We Didnt Use a Narrative for our music Video ( Everything Looks Sponatneous and Exciting)

  • We used special effects to keep the Observer interested. (Allowing Viewers to engage)

  • We also filmed our music video in time with the beat as the camera followed our artists actions.

Another theory which was influential for our music video and something we tried to follow was Andrew Goodwins and the characterics he recognised in music videos.

  •  Music Videos Demonstrates Genre Charcteristics - Which are like the clothes that the artists wear or the dance routines ( Picture of Artists Dancing)
  • The music video may show a relationship between the lyrics and the video whether it illustrates amplyfies or contrdicts. (Artists Improvising, doing whatever they want)
  • The following of the demands of the genre which are set by the record label like motifs and colours. Our genre is pop, so we tried to use as much of bright colours as we could. ( At the start of out music video our artists is shown dancing behind many colours)

  • Music videos also try to follow Intertexuality of other music videos.

I also tried to challenge the streotypes which was shown by Laura Maulvey. We didnt want our artists to be victim of the male gaze to the extent in other videos. We did this by the choice of our artists cloths, like our artists weared suits instead of bikinis.

For my ancillary work i tried to keep it conventional to our pop genre, so it would appeal to our target audience and also promote our artists. Here are some examples of digipaks that stood out to me and have influenced my work.

The reasons why these digipakes influenced my work is because they both looked appealing to thier target audience by the colours and images that they used.

The Genre of our Ancillary project followed our music video which is Pop. In my digipak i have tried to be creative by following the conventions of our genre like the bright colour i used.

  •  I Followed the convention of the 3 Colour rule. I used Green, Pink and White.
  • I followed the font covention as i only used the Unfortunate event and 1 other font.
  • I Made sure my record labels and copyright was clearly shown.
  • The main focus of mu ancilary was the artists

I also followed some of these conventions for my Advertisement.

Four our music video we decided to follow more conventions than we challenged because our genre was pop and our main target audience expected some conventions like the bright colours and if we where to break them, then our artists might not be promoted effectively and positively. Some aspects like the stereotypical ideas on female artists we tried to challenge like wearning suits which arent revealing, we managed to still promote our artists in a way that our target audience will still like. Also we wouldnt have much controll if we was a real group who promoted real artists because our labels would have limited it and have told us to follow conventions, because they are proven to be popular and promote sales.
